Late medieval medicine viewed humans as part of the cosmic system. Astronomy and astrology were believed to be able to interpret and cure humans. The manuscripts and prints from these fields of knowledge include not only texts, but also painted and printed illustrations and diagrams that bring the practices of understanding the world, diagnosis, and patient treatment to life.
The exhibition “Of Bodies and Stars – Medicine and Astronomy in the Late Medieval Collections of the LMU Munich University Library” illustrates these connections between medicine and astronomy using late medieval manuscripts and early prints from the University Library's collection.
The exhibition was created as a project by students of the History Seminar and the interdisciplinary ZMR Master's program (Maria Deischl, Ann-Cathrine Döderlein, Leonie Hänfling, Ruogu Li, Dr. Eveline Lieberknecht, Maximilian Schwarz, and Nalika Waizmann) under the direction of PD Dr. Tobias Daniels and Dr. Paul Schweitzer-Martin in cooperation with the LMU Munich University Library.
